Should my Interior Designer know LEED?

If you are considering LEED certification for your new home and are looking to work with an interior designer, you should consider someone who at least understands the rating system and is well versed in how to make energy efficient product choices without compromising design goals.

The benefits will be:

• Defining a LEED strategy at the outset that will work best for your needs and within your budget. As there are many different ways to obtain LEED “points”, you may for example want to focus on the building envelope more than on interior applications and finishes or you may want to make up some points on the interior as opposed to additional investments in the building envelope. Your interior designer should work with you and your architect and/or builder to make those choices.
• Taking into account LEED point “eligibility” when presenting you with product choices. This avoids the back and forth if product choices turn out not to be LEED eligible after all, for example if a flooring vendor can’t provide the required documentation for their sources. Alternatively, the designer may submit an interpretation request to the USGBC for you, if you have your mind set on a product that has not yet been acknowledged by LEED, but can be proven to meet LEED standards.
• Understanding how to apply new technologies. Lighting applications, for example are evolving quickly to include applications for LED lighting, integration with home control systems etc. A knowledgeable designer can ensure that you can make the best choices for achieving good and comfortable lighting, while meeting energy efficiency standards.
• Building credibility and cooperation with the LEED rater. Demonstrating an understanding of product choices and the LEED process, will make communication with the independent rater go much smoother and as a result save time and ultimately cost in obtaining the certification.
